SLO NOOR CLINIC RECEIVES $35,000 TO ADVANCE COMMUNITY CARE

Foundation recognizes health center as vital member of California’s safety net

San Francisco, CA (August 19, 2013) – Blue Shield of California Foundation (BSCF) announced today that it is awarding $35,000 in core funding to the SLO Noor Clinic to support their capacity to provide health care for low-income and uninsured residents in San Luis Obispo County and surrounding areas. The grant is part of the Foundation’s efforts to strengthen the network of those delivering care on the front lines and enable them to continue to serve millions of vulnerable Californians.

“As we prepare for health reform, it is critical that safety net providers have the flexible funds they need to respond to new opportunities and challenges ahead,” said Peter Long, Ph.D., president and CEO of BSCF. “Strong community health centers like SLO Noor Clinic are paramount to ensuring that underserved patients aren’t left behind.”

Throughout the state, more than 200 community health centers and consortia continue to open their doors to California’s underserved populations. These health centers provide essential services to nearly 3 million low-income patients each year, many of whom will remain uninsured even after health reform.

“This grant is amazing; it will allow us to take care of our core expenses so we are able to focus on caring for our uninsured patients rather than how we are going to pay the bills,” said Ahmad Nooristani, MD, Founder and Executive Director of the SLO Noor Clinic. “We are incredibly grateful for the Blue Shield of California Foundation grant. “

PG&E Grant Supports SLO Noor Foundation’s Plans for Free Dental Clinic

San Luis Obispo, CA –  Work by the SLO Noor Foundation to launch free oral health services for uninsured adults countywide is nearly completed.  A $10,000 grant received from Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) is aiding efforts to not only have energy efficient equipment and systems in place when the dental clinic opens later this summer, but also help lower utility costs in the future.

The free dental clinic will be located at 3071 South Higuera Street, Suite 110, San Luis Obispo.  It is currently undergoing tenant improvements to create a dental office with 3 operatories.  Volunteer dentists, hygienists, and dental assistants will provide oral exams, hygiene treatments, and basic restorative procedures for adults who previously skipped or postponed oral health care because they can’t afford out-of-pocket costs.

The dental services will compliment the other high quality health care services offered by the SLO Noor Clinic to the county’s uninsured since it opened in October 2011 on Phillips Lane in San Luis Obispo.  There is no sliding scale; no patient ever pays a penny for the services they receive. In just over a year since its opening, the SLO Noor Clinic’s volunteer medical staff has provided more than 2,000 patient visits for medical and vision care, performed in-house lab tests valued at more than $74,600, and provided free prescription eyeglasses worth more than $143,500.
